Celebrating Oregon Beer

Your fortnightly round-up of all the beer and hop news from the Beaver State.

After a long winter, sunny spring has very much sprung in Oregon. Along with the sun come an increasing number of events. Have a look at our listing, or just enjoy a pint at your local beer garden. And of course, make sure you bookmark the Oregon Homegrown taproom events in late May and early June. Details below!

News

Assembly to Close

In shocking news, Oregon's only Black-owned brewery is calling it quits on May 11. Founded in 2019, Assembly Brewing was known for mellow pub beers and Detroit-style pizza.

George Johnson, a Detroit native, started homebrewing more than thirty years ago, and has nurtured a dream to own his own brewery since the late aughts. He returned to his hometown to learn how to make Detroit-style pizza from the originating chef, went on to brewing school, and finally founded Assembly just before Covid. Assembly was a true Portland original and this is a big loss for the city.

World Beer Cup

Oregon breweries took home more than two dozen medals at the World Beer Cup, and Oregon cideries nearly swept their events. Breakside won more medals than any other brewery, with six.

Pelagic Expands

We wrote about new Forest Grove brewery Pelagic last year, and now they're joining with Bull Run Cider to open a new taproom in the former Ridgewalker space that once housed a post office building.

Boss Rambler Closing

Bend's six-year-old Boss Rambler is shutting down its brewery and taproom later this summer, focusing instead on their Stokes light beer line.

Oregon Homegrown, our first annual statewide collaboration, is almost here! Expect a whole lotta tasty when these beers start appearing in late May. For our inaugural collaboration, nine Oregon hop farms have teamed up with 20+ breweries to create a wide range of beer styles all featuring Strata hops. The new cultivar, developed by Indie Hops and released in 2018, is a versatile hop that can add light citrus and bright strawberry notes, or more savory cannabis-like notes. Drink up and see if you can spot the "Oregon" in your beer.

We have lined up four partner taprooms around the state where you'll be able to try these beers, and the dates are now set:

Celebrating Oregon Beer Your fortnightly round-up of all the beer and hop news from the Beaver State. It has been a crazy two weeks in the beer industry since our last newsletter. In Salem, breweries spoke out against two new taxes--one that would raise the price of a pint, and one that would raise the deposit on cans by a nickel to fight wildfires. Meanwhile, President Trump announced surprisingly large tariffs on nearly every foreign country, raising the specter of increased costs on steel,...
