Celebrating Oregon Beer

Your fortnightly round-up of all the beer and hop news from the Beaver State.

In a month's time, Oregon is going to be in the thick of the hop harvest. The earliest-ripening cones will come down from the trellises and some of them will go directly to breweries to become fresh hop beers. If you've never experienced fresh hop season in Oregon, you're missing one of the truly unique experiences in the world of beer.

Now is the time to plan your trip to Oregon. The best time to visit is from the third week of September through the first week of October--that's when you'll find the greatest density of fresh hop beers. (Curious about this wonderful beer? Start with this primer and learn how they're made.) It's a gorgeous time of year, and there's no better time to enjoy a pint of fresh hop beer.

Spotlight: Hops, Hops, & More Hops

About a year ago, Oregon Public Broadcasting put together a wonderful package on Oregon hop-growing--its history, how Oregon hops changed American brewing, what hops do in beer, and why fresh hop season is so special. You may have heard OPB promoting the rebroadcast of the podcast episode from The Evergreen last week, and it couldn't come at a more timely moment. Soon farms will be harvesting those hops, and you can taste the results beginning in September. In addition to the podcast, they created a short video and posted an article on the topic.
